John Knight works by invitation in art museums and galleries, working with physical, historical, and functional contexts to explore political and social forces at work. "My interest," he has said, "is to participate in the larger cultural critical discourse and not some rarefied site of my own construction."
For the last 45 years John Knight has lived and worked in Los Angeles. Recent solo exhibitions include Greene Naftali Gallery, New York (2015); Art Institute of Chicago (2015); Cabinet Gallery at Fitzpatrick-Leland House, Los Angeles (2014); Portikus, Frankfurt (2013); Galerie NEU and MD 72, Berlin (2013); and Cabinet Gallery, London (2012). He participated in the 2012 Whitney Biennial and the 2010 exhibition The Artist's Museum at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.
The Critical Issues in Contemporary Art Practice lecture series brings together artists and thinkers on the forefront of contemporary art practice to share ideas, raise questions, and engage with curious thinkers in both the UW School of Art + Art History + Design and the community at large. This annual series is organized to accompany the course Art 361/595, Critical Issues in Contemporary Art Practice, taught by guest lecturer Eric Fredericksen.
The series is made possible by the integral support of The New Foundation Seattle, a nonprofit organization devoted to encouraging the production of contemporary visual art through dynamic initiatives that stimulate artistic development, research, and presentation.
