How do materials exemplify different socio-cultural meanings and values? How are our cultures and identities expressed through pattern and self-styling? Inspired by the textile works of Derrick Adams in
Packaged Black: Derrick Adams and Barbara Earl Thomas, designers Corinn Bleck and Jáiz Boyd will guide ArtVentures participants to create visual narratives of identity through the use of pattern and different combinations of textiles. Jaiz and Corinn will engage participants in hands-on activities, sewing tutorials, and discussions on the history of sewing and sustainable textile practices. Participants will direct these skills and ideas into designing and making their own stories of identity using fabrics and appliqué techniques, sewing together a tote bag they can take home with them. Showcasing a small collection of vintage and functional sewing machines, Jáiz will demonstrate easy sewing techniques and allow each participant to both assemble their totes and attach their squares with stitching.
Ages 7 and up; younger participants should come with adult collaborators.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Born and raised in Spokane, Washington, with an inherent desire for more than what her community had to offer, Corinn Bleck’s achievements in art, fashion, and business began at an early age. Shifting from creation to curation five years ago, Corinn began selling vintage and reworked clothing under the brand November as a way to utilize her skills in creative direction and story-telling. Curating capsules to speak to larger topics and empower voices within the Spokane community, she recently added furniture and interior design to her repertoire under the brand 4723. In the last year of partnering with her husband, Jáiz Boyd of Birds in The Coast, they presented their A/W 21 collection in October, as well as a collaboration with local streetwear brand, City Chapters, at Corinn’s multifunctional space Adjust this past November. In June, the duo opened Adjust to focus on art and the community. At Adjust, they initiate abstract collaborations, elevate senses, and curate experiences through hosting events and installations.
Born in the Bay Area, California, Jáiz Boyd was exposed to art, music and fashion there before moving to Spokane, Washington as a late teen. He then focused on cultivating his sewing skills, leading to the founding of Birds in the Coast, a brand primarily focusing on travel accessories, in 2013. Jáiz designs and manufactures all of his products in Spokane at Adjust.
