Reflecting on the Skyspace: Architecture and Light

    Upper Level Galleries
    October 17, 2003 — January 11, 2004
This selection of mostly photo-based work highlighted the ways in which dramatic shadow and light animate varied structures, from church interiors to tents. Examples included Height and Light, Frederick H. Evans’ study on the way light and shadow define forms and create a spiritual atmosphere in cathedrals; Hiroshi Sugimoto’s images of ornate movie theaters built in the 1920s and 30s and lit purely by cinematic light; and Seattle artist Victoria Haven’s three-dimensional exploration of architecture and light, Supermodelcity. The exhibition was inspired by the new James Turrell Skyspace in the Henry’s Sculpture Court and selected primarily from the Joseph and Elaine Monsen Collection.
