On the occasion of
Donna Huanca and
ektor garcia’s exhibitions, join us outside of open gallery hours for a private workshop to talk through and feel the tension of being within a museum—a colonial institution associated with practices of archiving sacred items and controlling stories. Guided by fabian romero’s poetry scholarship practice, this workshop will give Indigenous peoples and people of color the opportunity to write in conversation with Donna Huanca and ektor garcia’s multidisciplinary arts practices. Ancestral Embodied Knowing speaks to the tension between the art canon and the femme, indigenous, and racialized body, as well as acknowledges the labor associated with these groups. Building off of this context, the workshop invites Indigenous and people of color participants to write about embodied experience and histories carried, and to think of storytelling as self-making. Themes that may be explored include the coloniality of gender and sexuality, and the racialized violence within hidden histories.
All levels of writing experience are welcome. Each participant will have the option to submit a completed piece of writing to be included in a chapbook publication that will be printed and made available to the public.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
fabian romero (Purepécha) is an Indigequeer poet, filmmaker, artist, and Ph.D. student in Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies at the University of Washington. fabian’s academic and artistic interests integrate settler colonialism, performance studies, and racial capitalism with storytelling and poetry. Their work centers Purépecha people from Michoacán, Mexico to Seattle, Washington and beyond.
