Senga Nengudi: Improvisational Gestures Performance & Talk

As part of the exhibition Senga Nengudi: Improvisational Gestures, dancers Joseph “jo” Blake and Haruko Crow Nishimura will activate one of Nengudi’s nylon mesh sculptures from the R.S.V.P. series.
Cellist Lori Goldston will accompany the dancers in this improvisational performance, creating a situation where the dancers’ movements, Goldston’s music, the form of the sculpture, and the audience are responding to each other.  Since first conceiving her R.S.V.P. sculptures in 1975, Nengudi has considered them as stand-alone pieces, as well as instruments for performance.
Following the performance, Nina Bozicnik, Assistant Curator, will share thoughts on the role of the body and ritual across Nengudi’s work.
