In this performance, actors read from a script constructed from text messages and emails sent between Dawn Cerny and the members of Kraft Duntz (David Lipe, Matt Sellars, and Dan Webb) during the eight months they spent developing and executing the installation
Fun. No Fun. currently on view at the Henry. The script traverses the divide between art and life, addressing each of the four’s particular concerns about such matters as scale and spatial experience, but also of baking bread.
Compiled and edited by Cerny, this script tells a story about the dynamics of collaboration—between each of the artists and architects, and the institution. It signals breakthrough moments and compromises, and what Cerny describes as “soul-crushing conflict.” It also evokes a process and conversation that is cumulative rather than linear, where ideas evolve over time, and where realities and outcomes are not always as one would hope.
The cast for this production includes Seattle-based comedians Kevin Clark and Travis Vogt and local storytellers Douglas Gale and Kathleen Tarrant.
Primarily working in sculpture, Cerny has recently made live performance presented at venues including the Vancouver Art Gallery, Western Washington University, and On the Boards, as part of their Open Studio series. Interpersonal relationships and navigating social life—as an artist and parent—are materials that have fueled Cerny’s work, and take on a central role in this latest script-based performance.
