Panel: What Makes a Good Art Critic?

This program is co-presented by the University of Washington School of Art + Art History + Design (SOA+AH+D) Painting + Drawing program and the Henry.

Please join us for a panel featuring visiting curator and art critic Seph Rodney, PhD; Kemi Adeyemi, University of Washington Associate Professor of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies and Director of The Black Embodiments Studio; and artist Srijon Chowdhury. The panelists will engage in dialogue facilitated by Sangram Majumdar, University of Washington Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at SOA+AH+D.
“In discussing the necessary traits of a competent critic, I think we may end up talking about relevant bodies of knowledge and how one comes to them – in relation with artists, curators, and institutions. What do we mean when we say ’research’ and how that may dovetail with or differ from scholarly research? We might talk about insight, about the nature of looking, about patience with that process and what patient looking might yield. How does ethical transparency, the nature of conscience and how one's probity play out publicly, especially when it can anger or disappoint people? Criticism can have public utility, and we want to talk about how that utility is of use to others.” – Seph Rodney
