    The Henry is excited to welcome Dana Claxton as the 2023 Monsen Photography Lecture speaker. This annual lecture brings key makers and thinkers in photographic practice to the Henry. Named after Drs. Elaine and Joseph Monsen, the series is designed to further knowledge about and appreciation for the art of photography.
    Dana Claxton (b. 1959, Saskatchewan, Canada) is a critically acclaimed international artist. She works in film, video, photography, installation, and performance art. Her practice investigates Indigenous beauty, the body, the socio-political, and the spiritual. Claxton has exhibited her work at venues including Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas; the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indianapolis; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. In 2018, the Vancouver Art Gallery, British Columbia presented a major survey of Claxton’s work. Claxton has received numerous distinctions including the Eiteljorg Fellowship, the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, the Hnatyshyn Award, the Scotiabank Photography Award, the VIVA Award, and the YWCA Women of Distinction Award.
    Claxton is department head and professor in the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at the University of British Columbia. She is a member of Wood Mountain Lakota First Nation, Saskatchewan, and resides in Vancouver, British Columbia.
