Derek Jarman's "Blue"
Derek Jarman's final feature-length film Blue (1993) pairs a vivid and unchanging blue screen with a powerful soundtrack narrating Jarman's struggle with HIV during the final years of his life. A poetic meditation on life, mourning, and death, the color blue is a source of inspiration and despair, referring both to the deep blue hue "International Klein Blue" created by Yves Klein and the color that veiled Jarman's fading eyesight.
Blue is narrated by Tilda Swinton, Nigel Terry, John Quentin, and Derek Jarman himself, and features an ambient soundtrack by Simon Fisher with additional contributions by John Balance, Brian Eno, Momus, Peter Christopherson, Karol Szymanowski, and Erik Satie.
