    Call for Reader/Scribes

For Ann Hamilton: the common S E N S E, reader/scribes are an ongoing presence in the galleries that give sociability to the often silent and solitary act of reading. Although reading at different times of day and from different pages, individual reader/scribes are connected to each other through the acts of reading and writing from a shared text.
We invite you to become a part of the common S E N S E by signing up as a reader/scribe.
As a reader/scribe, you will find a comfortable place of your choice to read out loud to the animals—represented both in images and materially present in the cultural artifacts on display. As you read out loud, you will transcribe selections of text from the project book that have significance to you. Each book and scribe log will accumulate the marks of individual reader/scribes to become a physical record of the collective activity.
Over the duration of the exhibition, the books from which you will read will change. The first book was The Peregrine by J.A. Baker. The second is Mercè Rodoreda's novel Death in Spring. Copies of the book will be provided. Each book and scribe log will accumulate the marks of individual reader/scribes to become a physical record of the collective activity.
In this video, University of Washington graduate student Anna Wagner reads from "The Peregrine."
If you have questions or would like to schedule a group larger than 20, please email Erin Bailey at readerscribe@henryart.org.
