Guided Tour of Carrie Yamaoka: recto/verso with Ariel Goldberg

Join writer and artist Ariel Goldberg for a guided tour of the works in Carrie Yamaoka’s first solo exhibition, recto/verso. Goldberg’s tour will consider how themes of visibility, perception, and subjectivity manifest themselves in Yamaoka’s personal studio practice, as well as in her collaborative activist work as a founding member of the fierce pussy feminist art collective. As they make their way through the upper galleries, encountering works that span two decades—some exhibited for the first time, some hung at the request of Yamaoka to take advantage of the Henry’s unique space—Goldberg will ask participants to reflect upon the effects of constantly changing conditions on both the making and viewing of Yamaoka’s work. Engaging participants through imaginative play that fashions the body as camera, sees color as a language, and identifies texture as text, Goldberg will illuminate Yamaoka’s fascinating creative processes.

Ariel Goldberg's publications include The Estrangement Principle (Nightboat Books, 2016) and The Photographer (Roof Books, 2015). From 2014-2017, they organized interdisciplinary readings at The Poetry Project. Goldberg has taught at Pratt Institute, Columbia University, The New School, and Rutgers. They were the 2018-9 Zuckerman Fellow, Curator of Community Engagement at the Jewish History Museum in Tucson, and now curate for the Leslie Lohman Museum in New York. Goldberg’s writing has most recently appeared in e-flux, Artforum, and Art in America.
