Picturing Identity: Portrait Photographs from the Henry Collection
Mezzanine
October 08, 2021
— January 16, 2022
When a portrait is made, a subject and a photographer engage in a complex exchange, with multiple factors affecting the outcome. The relationship between the photographer and the sitter comes into play. Do they know each other? And if so, is there trust or intimacy between them? Is the subject accustomed to being in front of the camera—a public figure or celebrity for example? Is the moment linked to a special event?
This presentation contains a selection of photographs, including images by Diane Arbus, Graciela Iturbide, James Van der Zee, and others, that offer a range of approaches to portraiture, from pictures of artists’ friends to formal studio portraits. Together, the works assert photography’s capacity to picture a subject’s identity and hint at complexities within.
The exhibition inaugurates the use of the Mezzanine space for display of works from the Henry’s extensive photography collection. The photographs in this selection are presented on the occasion of the 2021 Monsen Photography Lecture by Catherine Opie. This annual presentation brings key makers and thinkers in photographic practice to the Henry. Named after Dr. Elaine Monsen, the series is designed to further knowledge about and appreciation for the art of photography.
