Anicka Yi expands the sensory address of "visual" art, using techniques from culinary, floral, and scientific traditions to make work that acts upon several senses. She explores the history of art's self-refinement and exclusion of non-ocular approaches, and works to develop new materials and forms.
Yi lives and works in New York. Her work has been exhibited in group exhibitions at White Columns, New York; Bortolomi, New York; The Artist's Institute, New York; Karma International, Zurich; Gavin Brown's Enterprise, New York; The X-Initiative, New York; as well as a two-person show at 179 Canal, New York; and solo shows at Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery, Munich; The Green Gallery, Milwaukee; and 47 Canal, New York.
She was an MIT Visiting Artist in 2014, and won the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, 2011.
The Critical Issues in Contemporary Art Practice lecture series brings together artists and thinkers on the forefront of contemporary art practice to share ideas, raise questions, and engage with curious thinkers in both the UW School of Art + Art History + Design and the community at large. This annual series is organized to accompany the course Art 361/595, Critical Issues in Contemporary Art Practice, taught by guest lecturer Eric Fredericksen.
The series is made possible by the integral support of The New Foundation Seattle, a nonprofit organization devoted to encouraging the production of contemporary visual art through dynamic initiatives that stimulate artistic development, research, and presentation.
