Amir H. Fallah: A Declaration

Across painting, sculpture, and installation, Amir H. Fallah (b. 1979, Tehran, Iran; lives and works in Los Angeles, CA) bridges the personal and the geopolitical, combining references from popular culture, visual art traditions, and historical narratives that span time and geography. At the Henry, Fallah will create a site-responsive installation for the museum’s central stairwell that builds on his layered visual language to explore cultural hybridity and the negotiation of collective and individual identity within contemporary America.
Fallah’s installation comprises the inaugural commission in a new project series for the Henry’s central stairwell, a connective artery through all three stories of the museum building. Combining collaged imagery with dynamic use of color and pattern, Fallah’s installation will envelop the multi-level space, creating a visual journey and spatial choreography that invites reflection on national mythologies and deeply human questions of belonging.

Artist Bio

Amir H. Fallah (b. 1979, Tehran, Iran; lives and works in Los Angeles, CA) received his BFA in Fine Art & Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art and his MFA in painting at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions across the United States and abroad. Selected solo exhibitions include the Fowler Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Museum of Contemporary Art in Tucson, AZ; South Dakota Art Museum, Brookings SD; Schneider Museum of Art, Ashland OR; San Diego ICA; and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland KS.
Fallah was the founder and creative director of art & design publication Beautiful/Decay from 1996-2013. Falah has received numerous awards for his work, including the 2015 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, the 2019 Northern Trust Purchase Prize at EXPO Chicago, and the 2020 COLA Individual Artist Fellowship and the Artadia grant.
The artist is in the permanent collections of numerous national and international institutions, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; de Young Museum, San Francisco, CA; Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham, AL; Deste Foundation For Contemporary Art, Athens, Greece; The Microsoft Collection, Seattle, WA; Los Angeles County Department of Arts & Culture, Los Angeles, CA; Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA; Miguel Angel Capriles Collection, Caracas, Venezuela; and Salsali Private Museum, Dubai, UAE.
