Reed Collection Study Center

The Eleanor Henry Reed Collection Study Center is dedicated to providing access to the Henry Art Gallery’s permanent collection, to strengthening the Henry’s bond to the University of Washington community, and to forging new relationships with Northwest scholars, educators, students, and artists who want to learn from or teach with objects in the Henry’s collection.

Unlike most museum study centers, at the Reed Collection Study Center visitors can request to see all types of objects from the Henry’s diverse collections—including paintings, sculpture, ceramics, costumes and textiles, prints and drawings, and photographs. Access to some objects may be restricted due to the object’s condition, large size, or other museum constraints.

In addition to the close observation of objects, the Study Center offers access to object and artist files, a reference library of more than 5,000 volumes, and computer stations with collection search tools. These resources provide multiple points of entry for visitors to retrieve information associated with collection holdings.

The Study Center is open to individuals and groups of 30 or less by advance appointment. Up to 20 objects from the collection may be requested for study per visit.

Study Center hours are Tuesday–Friday from 9 am–5 pm. A limited number of evening appointments between 5-9 pm are available on Thursdays and Fridays.

Prior to making an appointment, it is recommended that visitors use the Henry Art Gallery’s online collection resources, Collections Search and Digital Galleries, to select works that will be of interest during the visit. Study Center staff are also available to help guide this selection process.
