Internships
Curatorial Internship
Autumn 2010
Interested in contemporary art? The Henry Art Gallery curatorial internship provides an introduction to the world of contemporary art, professional museum practices, and numerous aspects of researching, planning, and mounting museum exhibitions. The internships are an excellent resource for students considering a museum profession. The opportunity is open to any motivated individual in any department but might appeal particularly to undergraduate students in Museum Studies, Art History, Studio Art, Design, and CHID programs who have completed—with demonstrable success—at least one year of academic work.
The internship is unpaid and requires a minimum commitment of 12 hours per week, keyed to the 10-week UW quarter. Call for applications opens August 25, 2010 and closes September 21, 2010. The internship will begin on September 31 and continue until December 10, 2010, depending on the individual’s schedule. If desirable, extending the length of the internship will be an option.
Intern duties focus on the following areas:
1. Research: assisting with exhibition and project research in libraries, via the internet, by telephone, and written correspondence.
2. Archiving: assisting with compiling and maintaining exhibition, project, and installation photography archives.
3. Proposal maintenance and data entry: assisting with entry of artist and exhibition proposals into existing database, preparing meeting reports, facilitating meetings, and drafting follow-up letters.
4. Correspondence: assisting with departmental correspondence, including mailings, individual communication, faxes, and email.
5. Exhibition and departmental support: providing general support for many aspects of the exhibition process; assisting with exhibition checklist preparation; and general administrative support.
All applications require:
1. Cover letter stating why you are interested in interning at this art museum
2. Resume with three references
3. Writing sample with an art historical or visual arts topic (under 3 pages)
