Stagings: Claire Cowie and the Monsen Collection Photogravures

In 2002, Seattle artist Claire Cowie spent an intensive period working directly with the Henry’s Joseph and Elaine Monsen Photography Collection. Trained as a printmaker, Cowie was especially taken with the collection’s photogravures. Cowie’s work with the Monsen Collection moved her to create her own photogravures. The result was “Stagings,” a limited edition series of five photogravures that take full advantage of the unique visual and tactile qualities of this photo-imaging process. Cowie’s work was presented alongside the Monsen Collection photogravures that most inspired her. “Stagings” also featured photogravures by contemporary artists from the Henry Collection, including works by John Baldessari and Kiki Smith.
