Robert MacPherson. Untitled (Arch
of Constantine). c. 1860.
Albumen print. Henry Art Gallery, extended loan of Joseph and Elaine
Monsen, EL 81/4.
Roman Holiday presents an array of images representing the
famous sites of Rome, such as the Forum, the Arch of Constantine,
the Pantheon, the basilica of St. Peter’s, and Castel Sant’Angelo.
Originally made for a tourist market, these photographs evidence
the visual intelligence of such makers as Robert MacPherson, James
Anderson, Giorgio Sommer, and the d’Alessandri family. Drawn from
the collections of Professors Joseph and Elaine Monsen, this exhibition
includes two examples from the late 20th century, demonstrating
the continuing relevance of Rome as a subject and of 19th century
utilitarian photographs as objects for our 21st century contemplation.
Giorgio Sommer. Campidoglio (Roma) (Capitoline Hill, Rome).
c. 1870s.
Albumen print. Henry Art Gallery, extended loan of Joseph and Elaine Monsen, EL 79/151.
