About the Digital Interactive Galleries

In August 2007, the Henry began a two-year project partially funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to allow online access to the Henry’s permanent collection. Through the Digital Interactive Galleries (DIG) project, the Henry has implemented new collection database software and established digital documentation of works in the collection. A searchable database of over 22,000 object records displaying images for over 13,000 objects can be accessed through the Henry’s main website.

An important second component of the DIG project is the ongoing development of experimental, web-based introductions to specific mediums, subjects, and issues in art and design, all illustrated with images of objects in the Henry’s collection. These study guides are designed to introduce some key sub-collections and assist users in understanding, interpreting, and utilizing the Henry’s holdings.

The most recent addition to the DIG initiative is the Photography and New Media digital gallery. Photography and New Media uses specific works of art from the Henry’s collection to guide users through the history of technical, conceptual, and aesthetic innovations that have shaped the development of photography.

The Northwest Artists digital gallery was also launched this spring. Northwest Artists features video interviews and slideshows of several important regional contemporary artists represented in the Henry’s collection.

The first digital gallery, Costumes and Textiles, provides vocabulary and points of entry for understanding and exploring fashion, regional dress, and textiles from around the world and a guide on Embroidery Stitch Identification

Visitors are also encouraged to use the Collections Search page to further explore the richness of the collection.
